The excavators are busy in and around the big cities, where new residential areas are springing up. This is also the case in Stige Vest, located just north of Odense. Here, 43 new plots and three large plots have been divided up.
But with so much extra pavement, the need arises for a cleaning solution for rainwater and surface water. The standard solution is to establish wet basins, but this requires, firstly, a lot of space – and, secondly, special soil conditions.
At Stige Vest, the groundwater level is high. And with the areas that could be allocated for wet basins, digging would have to be very deep. This would mean that unusual amounts of ballast would have to be established to prevent buoyancy. Therefore, the developer chose to look at alternatives.
The best solution for urban areas
The developer at Stige Vest came to WaterCare for an alternative, and the choice was made to combine our fine particle separator with our heavy metal separator.
The solution can be buried, but not far below ground level. In addition, it is made of pipes that can withstand heavy traffic loads, so that the area above can be used - for example, for roads, common areas or driveways.
Circular cleaning system - out of sight
In the new residential area, the untreated rainwater and surface water is led into the underground system, where particles are first sedimented. The water is then passed through various natural minerals that retain dissolved substances such as phosphorus and heavy metals. The clean water is then discharged into Everrenden, which flows into Odense Fjord.
In this way, the rainwater and surface water are cleaned so that it can become part of the natural aquatic environment again – without anyone noticing. Because neither electricity nor chemicals are used, there is no noise or odor nuisance. And since it all takes place underground, there is nothing to disturb the eye in the scenic area.
Approved as BAT
Odense Municipality approved the solution as Best Available Technology (BAT), and the residential neighborhood in Stige Vest has thus received a smart and hassle-free solution that cleans the rainwater and surface water under the total of 43 plots.
